Ride Along With Me

Missing image

finest grade rubber
under the frame
drain away gravel
rivulets of rain-

growl of ignition
rumble to life
unforgettable sounds
of revving and smoke
hours of sweat strife
this ain't no joke!

ride along with me,
as we hug the turns
ride along with me,
the gas still burns.

cranking the tunes
shifting the gears
we strive to accel
the test of years

ride along with me,
as we hug the turns
ride along with me,
the gas still burns.

dreaming and planning
for that single moment
where we beat ten seconds
and cross that torment

ride along with me,
as we hug the turns
ride along with me,
the gas still burns.

checker flag waving
we go at green
stopping for nothing
we discover our dream

ride along with me,
as we hug the turns
ride along with me,
the gas still burns.

Author notes

The picture above is a 1969 Dodge Charger.
I love every inch of this model and make of vehicle.
It is my dream to someday own one. Ownership of these amazing vehicles, is jealously guarded and highly prized. Even now I can hear her unmistakable purr as you turn the ignition. Even better when you revv her up! Who calls "shotgun"?

The poem is meant to be read as lyrics. It's not my best, it is a random inspiration.
Inspired by the lyrics and song,"The Distance" by Cake. Also, my occupation as an auto technician. Yes, I've worked on these.

Beautiful picture. Love the way this sounds; these lyrics are really pretty. Especially the first and third stanzas, as well as the chorus. Great job.

  • I read it first without the image and author notes and I love that though it is an homage to an obvious classic it is also a wonderful metaphor of life and love and still being able to go the distance. It definitely strikes a lyrical note and I can see humming it while riding along.

Motoring is such a great metaphor for grabbing
and living life. I like how this hums along.
It is very upbeat and can't help but make a
    body feel happy. Blue

this is a rollicking piece. I love the short, sweet lines it makes the poem read like you're so busy driving, you don't have time for whole sentences, this works here.

    Your Taste

in cars is well founded. For the model of which you speak, has fulfilled many dreams over the years. Though meant as lyrics, all the more enjoyable. You have given voice to a long sought wish, I pray it is realized.

That year Charger is a beautiful piece of machinery, one of the true "Muscle" cars of that fine era. My best friend at the time had a 69 Camaro SS 396, totally stock with the smog pump it ran 11's. What a ride that was. These little front wheel drive rice burners of today don't know what true horsepower is.

I have to say, yes, the Camaro SS was definitely also a one-of-a-kind. Your friend's car sounds like it ran like a dream. I still get goosebumps from the 440 Big Block, and 450 HP, though. No baby bottles needed for that. I must say though, when Dodge came out with the Viper, 10 valves was more than enough car for us all.
