An image worth a thousand clichés,
The Land of the Ankh,
Hard to imagine in this tranquil lifeless ocean,
To die here in this land,
Would be a beautiful death,
With the sun setting on my life,
A worthy epitaph,
This collage of colours,
A window to the Heaven’s,
And a glimpse of Ra’s closing eye,
Do not lament over my demise,
But be envious,
As I rest my head on this quartzite bed,
The blue evolving to red,
Before sinking to the back and beyond,
This blissful feeling,
As the cool permeates on my face,
As the moon kisses the sky,
I let the desert breeze whistle,
And embalm my body with Seth’s silken veil,
No words needed to tell my story,
For the elegy is written all around,
An enchanting symphony of sand,
That cloaks the hidden well,
The secret to the Ankh,
The well of the deep,
The Oasis I am going to greet,
My only qualm about ending my serene life,
Is that I deserted my one true love.
Author notes
This is probably the hardest poem I've ever written because I'm feeling so creatively dead at the moment, which will probably come across in the poem. I forced myself to write it because the contest title spurned me on. I have visited Egypt and I was amazed by so many things, the history was incredibly interesting, I was originally going to write a poem entitled; "The Elegy of Hapsetshut" (which I may still do at some point), but found I was just stuck. Instead I decided to spend a long time going through all of my Egypt photographs and find something which really stimulated me. The one thing which did was just a very simple sunrise photograph over the desert going over to Abu Simbel in the south (near Sudan). I was so entranced by this sunrise that I forgot what actually surrounded me, which was sand and more sand. I was quite literally in the middle of nowhere and I suddenly actually felt very insecure, if not for the bus behind me it was (and I worked the out later) a fifty hour walk to the nearest town (providing I walked continually day and night at a generous pace). It was a dangerous beauty.

A feeling of realism comes through in your poem a sense of being there, reading not the words but the feeling behind them made it enjoyable for me. well written with a nice flow that I really did enjoy. Thank you for entering and best of luck in the contest
