I was raised
To know right from wrong
To love my neighbor as myself
Not to take candy from strangers
To know God as my savior
To do good deeds
Not to smoke
Not to drink
To say ‘thank you’
And to say ‘please.’
Sometimes things don’t turn out
Quite as they've been planned…
I’ve used these lessons
As guidelines to my life.
They’ve helped to save me
From pain
From hurt
They prolonged my innocence
And yet today,
I am mature.
I am a contradiction.
I love,
But hate to do so when it hurts so much.
I give,
But also take from each experience an emotion, a feeling.
I despise thieves,
Yet I permit my heart to be stolen,
Time and time again.
I am fun loving,
But I am serious about life.
I am poor
However, in experience, I am wealthy.
I am judged,
And yet accepted as I am.
Call me an oxymoron;
A hardworking procrastinator.
Call me a metaphor;
A wretch of love.
Call me a paradox,
A contrast,
A difference.
Call me your hero,
A someone,
Or even resistance.
Only know
That as you call me these things,
I will listen,
But still remain me.
