Battle on the Sea

Nervously glancing across the line
Waves crashing, and pounding in time
The barrel flashes, the light turns green
The surfers dive in and at the moment it seems

That the sky grows darker as they make their way out
Twenty, no thirty, just swimming about
Wondering when the first wave will arrive
They circle, and breathe, and cling to their lives

The clouds they hover as the sun turns black
They’ve reached the point
Too late to turn back

The first wave comes like a wolf in the night
A few of the men, put up a great fight
They paddle straightforward in a desperate move
These men from the start, were bound to lose

A few of them remain, adrift on the sea
They wait for that wave that will set them free
The light is now gone, the sea has turned rough
All of the men can no longer feign tough

They turn their boards forward as they swim towards the shore
The waves have conquered
They are leading the score

But in that moment of sullen despair
A wind of hope blows fast through the air
One man remains still hugging his board
Paddling and fighting his way towards the shore

The fight has begun, the sea pulls back
The man swims forward, prepared to attack
The wave gathers speed as it readies for the blow
The man glances back and at this time he knows

The clouds they hover as the sun turns black
He’s reached the point
He would never turn back

He rides up the titan, a flame on the fumes
Visions pass by of a watery tomb
He stands up, it’s over, he knows that it’s done
The battle is finished, the battle is won

The sun crashes through and darkness has drowned
The surfer continues, faster than sound
He cuts up the wave, his road to the sky
He will always live on, and there’s no question why

For the clouds they brighten as the darkness retracts
He’s reached the point
From which he will never turn back.
