Baby Plug into Memory

My body met my self
somewhere in time
and all before was dark
delayed in slime.
I don’t remember kicking
In the womb,
and had no being more
than in a tomb.
Memory is what my self
is made of, nothing more
and nothing less; confined
in waves of time
that wash away the shore.

So when a body meets the self
it can pull together all that darkness on a shelf
to be examined by a moralist
who asks the darkness, “when does human life exist?”

Although I don't Agree with this...

    In the womb,
    and had no being more
    than in a tomb.

It is highly poetic thought to bring these lines.

    Well thunk 'traveler.

your memories are lost over time and new ones replace them. Does that mean that you weren't alive when you first experienced them or even when you were going through what became a memory. Really, the argument of when life begins is a ridiculous one when you look at cell growth taking place. That is like saying a seed is not alive until it pokes through the ground.

    • You are correct, and I agree with those who say that “life” starts at the moment of conception. Of course, this poem does not speak to that issue. My poem attempts to address the narrower question of when it is that we become human, which is why I used the word “self” and asked “when does human life exist?” The poem raises more questions than it answers and the only answer it offers (memory is what my self/is made of) is demonstrably false.

Intriguing poem. Self, and body, separated then pulled together 'all that darkness on a shelf'.

He may as well ask "where does human life exist?"

Hey, cool poem you have here. It gets the reader thinking about a lot because that topic is definitely a controversial issue. I believe life exists when they are in the womb, but I am not about to start any arguements on here with other people because hey, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I really did like this poem though, and I liked how you rhymed it. Great job with it, I enjoyed being able to read it!

Human life exists ONLY at birth. To suggest otherwise is silly. By definition, life within the womb is pre-human.
