Kind sir, will you show me
Down which pathway I should go?
Our world's so full of war and hate
I really do not know.
I must believe in something
There's rules of life to learn
I want to be completely free
For I have energy to burn.
Belief brings groups together
For strength and general gain
But the yen for wealth and power
May set us all at war again.
Are we doomed to argue evermore
'bout who's wrong and who is right
Will we always want the biggest guns
To enforce our will by might?
Your face is sort of craggy
Your hair has turned to white
You must have found the pathway
That I ask about tonight.
"Young sir, I am a common man
Some I win and some I lose
This little story may help you out,
You,who have yet to choose.
While walking in a forest once
Just wandering for a lark
I missed the track and lost myself
Was caught out in the dark.
A glow of light attracted me
I found some strangers there
'Come on in and join us
Ain't much but we can share'.
I enjoyed my meal with strangers
We talked, then they put me right
Their skin was black as coal
While mine was only white.
These strangers did not care about
The different colour of my skin
They saw someone who needed help
So I was invited in.
Choose any path, my young friend
They're all on an equal plane,
Just be friends and share a lot;
You'll have so much to gain.

A wonderful write my friend. For all the dreadful things we see, hear and read about in the media there is a whole other world as well.
News mongers paper the world with the worst cases of human folly and write about the percieved heros and villains...
and then there is our world, communities that band together, collecting things like blankets, food and dimes to help... even the poorest of souls come out, shedding things as well as tears and effort in the name of world-wide neighborliness.
I would venture to say that most of the world is pure in heart and deed and that it is a mere handful of rotten souls that tax trust so heavily that the very roots of brotherly love are injured...
and still... when innocents are pained, people overcome their distrust (and even shell-shocked sense of self-preservation) to help.
The bottom line is, that if you can not believe in and be open to the concept of goodness, it can never be yours, and if it is, you can't know what a treasure you were given.
s and best wishes always... ~Genie~

Hi Genie, Many thanks for your comprehensive comment. I agree with your thoughts expressed here. There two worlds we live in; the one the media chooses to show and the day to day one where we all get on with the business of living. Would the two were one and the same.

Very good poem my friend. Good luck in the contest.

Many thanks John. An older poem with a partial rewrite. Amazing how things have changed in a year or so. Maybe I have learned a little more over that time.

Powerful
And in the end what do we gain? In the world of power and greed there is no blak or white. There is only the color of money, sadly. But my friend a truly wonderful piece of poetry.

Bob my friend, we must start somewhere right now to dilute the greed and lust for power, why not with positive poetry ? I appreciate your comments greatly as you are an astute man of experience.

This is a beautiful poem. It may be one I have read before but not sure. Love the rhyme in this and the rythm was just right. Isn't it just wonderful to come across strangers who don't judge you and accept you for what you are. I loved it a lot and I wish you all the best in the contest.

This is an older one revisited and partly re-written. My ideas and knowledge of poetry have both changed since I first wrote this poem. I thank you for your astute and supportive comments. I know I can always rely on you for honest feedback.
