tug-o-war (not a childhood game anymore)

i hold my hands up
waiting for something
to be placed into them
that is forever

then i remember
forever is a figment
of imaginations
and fairytales

an unexpected voice
over the tele wires
leaves my stomach
in my shoes

already in a panic
waiting for the rain
to dry my desert mouth
and
my voice box
to work without the squeak

to build something new
while the old is still in deconstruction
is like trying to build the dam
that the beavers are eating
all the while

let the flood come
let it wash me away
to a place
where the answers to their questions
are bobbing around me
and all i have to do
is reach out
and receive

i offer only silence
in the faces of
the ones who need
something
to hold on to
while i am gone

my promises are mere
words in the way
of the emotion
that governs my body
back to the arms
of one
and does not throw me about
to whomever has their arms
out at the moment

trust this
i know where i am going
it is not where i have been

    an unexpected voice
    over the tele wires
    leaves my stomach
in my shoes --- this is genius. i love the figuration of feeling passing through time, and through bodily movement without ever moving.

and it seems you've done it once again. this is a gracious piece. metaphor after metaphor, word placement, line cutoffs, stanza rhythm... all of it perfect.
