the snow is coming down
and the silence
just keeps
building

I can hear the flicks
of my lighter,
the sound
of my heart,
and your slow
exhale.
but the silence
is more than
audible.
how could a simple confession
of my affection
amount to so much
we can’t
talk about?
your neighbors car
comes up their
driveway,
catching us
standing there
like deer in
headlights.
we’re at
opposite ends of the porch
but we couldn’t be
farther
away.
I tell you
it’s cold outside.
you say I
don’t have to stay.
and
the silence becomes
more deafening.
