The Silk Necklace

Before she left
Sarita put her costume jewelry
In a cookie can
From Italy:
Two watches, neither running
A paste pearl braclet
With a rhinestone clasp
Plastic lockets purchased
From a catalog.

Before she left
Sarita emptied every bureau drawer
Of chipped agate brooches
And tarnished silver rings
Tin can brimming with
Artificial beads and bangles.

All packed away

With precious care

Sent by parcel post

To her daughter

A continent away.

The only thing she kept:

A green silk necklace

Beaded with gold thread,

From a love

Before her spouse,

She whispered to me,

And never worn.

She loved faux glitter,
Feared the loss of what was real.

At her soft plea,

I placed the necklace

In her coffin

When she left.

Ahhh, the things we cherish rarely have a monetary value to speak of, do they? Your pen dances in so many directions, Lita - all of them fruitful and enduring in loveliness.

Wow. I am floored by this one. It is an absolutely beautiful poem. I remember many years ago seeing my great-grandmother with similar keep sakes. The ending of the poem was spectacular. I truely enjoyed it.

    I'm stunned...

A sad and quiet write to me. Filled with memories of what means what to people. Your repetition of
"Before she left" gave me 'hindsight-chills' when I had finally reached the end of this piece. Such a matter-of-factly told story of frozen moments in time. You concluded this with a nice poetic twist; very good and nicely scribed.

A beautifully written story with so much imagery that I could see her whole life flash before me as I read.

This was a pleasure to read.

    All the best... Sue

Well, well!...I was wondering where this poem was heading, and the meaning behind all the fake jewellery, and then the ending came. You didn't disappoint, it was a very moving ending. I liked the whole idea you had for this poem and could just see this lady in my mind...alby

Hi,alby! I wasn't exactly sure where it was going, either, until I was almost there, and realized I was writing a partially true story of my mother, who did in fact, just love her costume jewelry! Thank you for reading and your sweet words, as always, my dear friend. Lita

Lovely and sad, a beautiful read.. I don't know why it made me cry, except for the fact, I was not there when my own grandmother was laid to rest and still regret it to this day.. But I made sure her favorite Peridot ring was with her..

You are very kind to comment, and share the loss with me. Although I changed some of the facts, this was about my mother, who did have her secrets.

Thank you so much for your kind remarks. I wrote it for a contest that has closed, but I liked the prompt anyway.
