100 hours...

Missing image
One hundred hours
and it was done
The war for us
was almost fun

The enemy ran
and melted away
the victory found
in just four days

Quick and easy
and it was done
but the fight of our lives
had just begun

Seventeen years
have come and gone
but a brand new battle
comes with each dawn

Unending struggles
a part of my day
with sickness and pain
that won't go away

The first Gulf war
that ended so quick
is still not over
for us who are sick

Author notes

Option 4

Most USA wars have a casualty rate of around 10% but the first Gulf War had a casualty rate of 25%. We appear to be fine by first glance but the health problems have destroyed many of our lives. It is called Gulf War Syndrome and 2 months ago after so long the US government finally admitted it did exist.

  • A very good poem and expose of the war syndrome, all war have victims uncounted, how can one know one is responsible for deaths without it having a n effect on one, surely that it the sign of humanity. liked your tale particularly the short lines which kept it firmly on its course. thank you.

    • except of course that war wasnt against the innocent. It was against Suddam Husseins Army who invaded a peaceful ally of Kuwait. In 4 days we evicted them and it was over

  • it is very deep and i see the other side of war...

the emotions of this brings to light another destructive side of war. you told of this in a simple manner but the emotions behind it was the powerful force.

    TOUCHING!!!!

Ineed in todays world so many things people do to harm others, and not all are out in the open for us to see. So many chemicals, hidden to our eyes yet invade our bodies and minds. My heart goes out to all our men and women who dare to go anyway and help those less fortunate than us. 's

    very good Mark
I think you should send this into the military paper for them to post.
One of the worse things of this war is it is still destroying lives as those affected by Gulf war syndrome and their love ones continue to struggle with the after affects.
You know I would take your pain if I could, but all I can do is continue to pray for you and be here if you need me.

Wow! I am saddened to hear that you and so many others are so sick, yet glad that they finally acknowledged its reality.

This is well written. It expresses the progression of emotions well...from the feeling of victory to the difficulty of ongoing pain and sickness.
