Sisters

Looking back, remembering when,
before we both had grown.
When we were young and looking forward
to futures yet unknown.

From playing house, tents on chairs
and dressing Barbie dolls,
to 45's on our record player
and pop idols on our walls.

Sharing rooms, divided with tape
when we'd have a little quarrel.
We always knew it wouldn't last
and we'd be friends again tomorrow.

Through high school years, my college days,
the opening of new doors.
When I moved out to live with friends,
"our" room became "yours".

Boys and dating, marriages,
the birth of your children,
gave me the experience of being a mom
that I'd never have again.

Marriages ended, the kids grew up
and then you moved away.
It left an emptiness in my heart
That I still feel every day.

For sisters share a special bond
especially when only two.
So on your birthday let me say
how much I love and miss you.

      it's hard when you are close to a sibling and they leave to pursue their own life. It feels like they've taken a part of you with them. Both of my siblings moved far from home, my sister to Florida, and my brother to California. It's more difficult when your family is very small, as is mine.

    aww, this is beautiful.
    so full of emotion, you've clearly put a lot of throught into this. excellent description throughout held my attention perfectly. i think the rhyme in this is good and helps with the flow, and i especially love the ending stanza, so sweet and full of love.

    i really enjoyed reading this.
