To those concerned, twas once upon a time,
I longed to be a poetical star;
I dreamed I was, the one of golden rhyme.
While penning words of beauty quite sublime,
while adoring fans worshiped from afar.
To those concerned, twas once upon a time.
Lofty thoughts filled my psyche all the time,
songs of youth, songs of love, I knew no par.
I dreamed I was, the one of golden rhyme.
With beating heart, my voice a dulcet chime;
Sounding soft sonnets, the door left ajar.
To those concerned, twas once upon a time.
Now I lie in rags, a man with no dime;
Shattered dreams, broken heart, I have no star.
I dreamed I was, the one of golden rhyme.
Gone is the dream, I have no hill to climb,
Downed by fate, held tightly to the Muses bar.
To those concerned, twas once upon a time,
I dreamed I was, the one of golden rhyme.

thanks for such a wonderful piece!

This is a poignant consideration of poetic aspirations vs. the usual theme of inspiration. It has a refreshing originality. I like the honesty of it which does not pretend the author has no vanity, but also admits that the dreams once dreamed have passed him by.

Dreams Create!!!
The man of golden rhyme you were?
I wonder what jammed in that spur?
Ten beats and every other line?
Rhyme middle ones throughout this tine?
Tine of the fork that pitches hay
Or perhaps throws a brand new day. -
