Riff on hope

Riff on hope

Not gonna' get all intense
on you or nothin'

      but...

  now that you’re finally here
I gotta say, it took you long enough.

Hope. sheeesh...
  like it could fail.

  Hope pays attention.
  Hope knows when its time
  to make an appearance.

Hope knows when truth and openness
  are ready to be seen.

Hope knows that peace is getting impatient
and will keep slappin’ the face of
those still trying to get rich off the innards
      of their own disease
  whatever form their war takes
or trough of fear they feed from.

Hope knows your own conscience
gonna’ keep slappin’ you in the face
  for awhile here  too,
and you’ve earned it if any of this
  surprises you.

But at least now you know again

  Hope is not the illusion.

Author notes

I don't know. I like Obama, and "hope" he does a good job as president. I even think he will do one, considering the challenges facing him. But I'm more worried about how hope seems to be this mystical thing when it doesn't have to be. Obama won't save the world, or our country, if we too don't work towards this same salvation.
Anyway, this is my tribute to Obama, and to our country. Hope lives!

Please tell me what you think

I plan to revise this poem: please leave constructive criticism!

    In line 3 ...

it should be "you", not "your".

I like this, but it doesn't work with this contest, or at least it isn't what I was looking for. However, I think you've done an excellent job in the main.

    Thanks for entering.

Oh Bravo Doug. Hope has been lost by many, even I became politically jaded. But "hopefully" we will see some changes that will inspire a nation!

    Marvlous and timely write!

    Bravo!

    The ever present silver lining

Hope is always there... It is that attitude that hold our heads up, allowing us to climb rather than dive (like the plane that emergency landed in the Hudson River recently). I thoroughly agree with you, my friend, on the place of hope in these coming times . To paraphrase the words of the last leader that inspired me like Obama, JFK, "Ask not how this man will help you overcome, ask yourself what you will do to help this man help all men". My hope is Obama will provide the leadership that rallies the hope and hands and hearts of the people to the cause and contribution needed to create a nation of caring, compassionate citizens ready to be leaders of peace and harmony in this changing world.

Thanks for your hopeful heart and this reminder that the change is on us.

    Write on, brother

    Rahad

I'm sorry and please excuse my nosing in input. But J.F.K. said,"Ask not, what your country can do for you,but what you can do for your country". He implied service to our nation.

I don't usually respond to other's replies, but what won me over was Obama's plan to help college student pay off school loans with community service.

        Your nose is quite welcomed

'To PARAPHRASE the words of the last leader that inspired me like Obama, JFK, "Ask not how this man will help you overcome, ask yourself what you will do to help this man help all men". '

Now, perhaps my changes are not quite what some consider a paraphrase, but the intent is the same... it is not what our government is going to do for us that is important but what WE the People are going to do to help make the changes needed. My call to the people is to serve the country along side our leaders, not to sit back and expect miracle solutions.

        Thanks for your feedback

        Peace and blessings,

        Rahad

ahh, thank you rahad. Like a balm of soothing lotion you remind me that its not just me who feels and thinks 'my' way. Sometimes I feel like I'm to harsh in the words I use...

I can agree with this 110%. We can't expect him to fix single handedly in one term or even two if that should be. The mucked up mire of the last 20 years or so. Especially the last 8. What's that old adage again? "If you want something done right,do it your self". Shake off fear mongered complacency we've been fed a steady diet of and roll up those sleaves getting on with a healthy dose of good ol' yankee ingenuity.Inspite of brain fuzz brought on with food and drug additives and poisons that EPA,FDA,BAD TRADE AGREEMENTS have turned a blind eye to. We haven't voted to crown a King. And this isn't any magical mystery tour we're in. It's the real world folks.

lol. Indeed. I love the magical mystery tour album and have wondered if it refers to, on some level, reincarnation and the wonders life provides when you truly are immortal. lol
      Anyway, thank you suseann.

Hope - there is always hope.
I loved the thougths and feelings in your poem.

"Hope knows that peace is getting impatient
and will keep slappin’ the face of
those still trying to get rich off the innards
    of their own disease
    whatever form their war takes
or trough of fear they feed from."

This stanza nails it; hits every mark there could be from the real war to our inner wars and the war of financial mishap that has takend such a toll on us all.

There is always hope. A pleasure to read and enjoy. Well done my friend. ~Pamela

Thanks, Pamela. I find myself 'nervous' when it comes to putting poems out there because of the internalness they may evoke. lol. But I do it anyway.
Truly, it is good to hear your thoughts on it.
