After The War.

After the war is over
With more than a thousand dead,
Gaza's orphans are weeping
And all the gutters run red.

After the war is over
And Israel's guns are stilled,
Jerusalem's celebrating
For all the children they've killed.

But rising up from the ashes,
A dark righteous anger is born.
A new generation will fight on.
After the war.

Author notes

This is based on the beautiful and sad Jerome Kern song, "After The Ball" from the musical "Showboat". My new version foretells how the devastation wrought on Gaza will never be forgotten or forgiven.

this is the law of the universe ... what one sows, one reaps. others call it karma ... harsh but true.

this was brilliant. though i completely dont understand one responder who want to blame hammas. this is a massacre genocide, 1500 massacred, to 6 israeli sodliers. 4 by friendly fire. the ceasfire isnt even really a ceasfire. now the people who murdered there children are allowed to stay there, and if a palestinian is unhappy with this, they too shall suffer the same fate of their brothers and sisters. well written though

I suppose writing about an abomination excuses turning a wonderful melody into an abomination! Actually this is well-written, but so very sad -- although I don't expect an end to the war anytime soon. Your meter is fine, and the ending lines sound very much like Kern's song.

My author's notes were wrong: the music and lyrics were actually by one Charles Harris; Kern & Hammerstein inserted the song into "Showboat" to add period flavour to the score.

I love this write!! It touched my soul, heart, and mind. I've lost loved ones, and friends that are fighting over in Iraq, and trying to get over it is really really hard. Thank you for this write!

I doubt that Israel would celebrate the deaths of children, if they do, shame on them.
I blame both sides for this, mostly Hamas who are
so selfishly sickening as to shoot from rural areas where citizens reside.
All choices made in war are difficult.
    Thank you for entering.
What exactly is your gift to Jesus?
Perhaps I am daft, but I seem to have missed it???

You should read the New York Times online today. It reports from Israel that many Israelis are displeased about the ceasefire as they wanted to see Hamas totally destroyed no matter how many children died. And you are misinformed about Hamas, or rather brainwashed by Israeli propaganda. You appear to be confused too - usually few people live in rural areas, that's what makes them rural.

I'm not on this site to argue with people,
Everybody has a right to their opinion.
I realize that the Isralis' are a violent people, but so is Hamas and the Arab nations, so is the USA at times, misinformed??
I think not, just a matter of opinion, the media tends to report what they choose,

This contest was a christmas contest about what gift would be given to Jesus, Not a contest to bash people, Israel or otherwise.

YOUR contest may have been about dear old Jesus. However the poem is in MY contest which is about vhow DISGUSTING the Israeli murderers are, the SWINE who slaughter babies. What would your Jewish Jesus have to say about that?
