...and then I think,
What am I but a victim of my mind;
feelings I can't comprehend,
meanings I can't find.
I know myself as well as I know
some far distant star.
I don't know where my dreams come from
or even what they are.
Can't sort out the things I know
from things that I've been taught.
And meanwhile all I'm left with
is an incomplete thought...

Ah, we have to admit, our teen age minds
still residing within us, still questioning,
though one would think years would bring
more substantive answers!!!!

Yep, that was the crux of it. I do sometimes feel I've learned a few things through the years and can handle things better than I used to. But any kind of stress (lack of sleep, too many days of below freezing weather, etc.) and the demons sneak back in.

I've been there...that's pretty much been my life.
Yeah, I try to shut off the thoughts, the accusations, the incrimination, it isn't always easy. Still, I am great at blocking out bad things. My one saving grace.
I like this, you're a better poet than you let on!

Thanks for the compliment. I'm always seeking approval. That poem is a goldie oldie. I wrote it in junior high. I could remember most of it, but had to do a little fancy dancin' to replace out with a couple of missing lines.

The sorting and processing...I know it too well rockabye. Then there's the searching, looking for the missing link, the tiny piece that we can just pop in and suddenly it all makes sense.
I thought when I saw this come up as new it had author notes that you wrote this a while ago. How long? I just rediscovered a batch of poetry I wrote well over 20 years ago...combing through, rereading, trying to remember what was behind the words. Funny, I still have some of the same questions.

Wrote it in junior high. Rewrote the lines I couldn't remember. Shades of the missing line in the goat haiku. Thanks for the comment.

The goat haiku is infamous in certain circles.
We knew the missing line would find its way home eventually
