Math

Last year, I was great at math,
Speeding by and being bored
While kids were learning what I learned

My mom was so proud when I got
Into advanced math,
And so was I,
Excited, I wasn't going to be bored
In class anymore.

Once I got there,
I started to fail,
And my confidence went down.
I started to cry because
I didn't understand,
And no one would explain
In a way that I could.

After a while, I figured
I should be in a normal math class.
I talked with my teacher about it.
We changed and now I was in normal math.

My mom was not happy,
But I was.
She thinks I just went back because
I felt like slacking off,
I didn't feel like doing work.
She is so wrong.

I liked math a lot last year...
Now, it's just another subject
I don't quite understand.
A subject where I always feel behind.
A place where I get all the stress
Pent up in me, eventually
Burst, and get so angry.

I wish I could understand
What math is,
How it works,
What to do.

I wish my mom wouldn't be angry
And accept what has happened,
And not expect me to be good at it
Like she is.

Please tell me how you felt when you read it.

  • I hate maths.I got 100% in English and flunked out on maths every time. Guess what, it's never done me any harm at all. I figure that what you need to know will come to you in time. We can't all be wizzes at everything. You stick to what you do best. Life is too short to worry about something you just don't relate to. As long as you can do basic stuff like count add up balance your finances with some kind of decency then why worry. That's all you need for now. Nice poem from your heart. Well Done.

Aaah, it'll come back to you. If you were 2 years ahead last year, then you clearly have a gift for it. But you need to be relaxed and happy to learn anything, and a teacher who isn't particularly good at teaching can ruin anyone's chances. Hopefully you'll soon catch up and feel confident again. That class was wrong for you... Maybe next year the teacher in the next class up will be different, and you could try again.

And if not, you have your whole life ahead, and these days you don't have to do it all when you are at school... unless you want to actually be a accountant or something or study math at University, the you can do it later and find a teacher who goes at the pace you like. Or just a better teacher.

If you think your mum is good at math, you could try asking her to explain something you don't understand... however, this would not be a good idea in my house, I'm WAY too impatient to teach my own children!
