I picked the beans this morning
In the hot and burning sun
Pulled out all the bushes
Their growing season's done.
The beans I put so carefully
Into a great big pot
Some already seeded
But I want to keep the lot.
Most I'll cook a bit and store
Some are too far gone
I'll save those seeds and dry them
Plant them later on.
That little plot has done it's bit
We now have beans galore
Next year we're all set
We can easy grow some more
That's the joy in gardening
As everybody knows
You can reap a mighty harvest
Just depends on what you sow.
In the hot and burning sun
Pulled out all the bushes
Their growing season's done.
The beans I put so carefully

Some already seeded

I can't wait to get my hands into some nice black dirt

When I plant my garden, I interplant my beans with "leaf vegetables" like lettuce, mesculin, spinach and mustard because the beans fixate nitrogen in the soil, the extra boost is much appriciated by the the leafy neighbors and the plants supply a lot more leaves without having to add anything to the soil.
s and happy gardening ~Genie~

I would dearly love some black dirt, rich fertile soil. But I have light sandy stuff that i have to make the most of. It's also full summer now and we have had heat wave conditions [ = 110 degrees plus ] for a week or so. This is my first year at this place and it was a wilderness last April, with weeds and rubbish six foot high. Next year a lot of this years work will bear results.
I appreciate your commenting and wish you happy gardening too.

Makes me want to dig in the dirt, love to watch things grow...

Me too, which is one reason I am a gardener. I have been digging potatoes this morning. Just enough to go with a salad for tea tonight. Many thanks for your comments, I appreciate them all.

"You can reap a mighty harvest
Just depends on what you sow."
Such a delightful read upon simple pleasures. I could read a book of such. Even children would enjoy. Love especially the double entendre.
Good one,

Hi Mary, thank you for such an astute comment. The garden is hard work at times but the rewards are many. the two lines you quoted could apply to life itself, but were not intended that way, just a simple matter of picking beans.

Yum! Beans! Beans are terrific, I especially love broad beans. This was a really delightful piece that showed me your little garden and the joy you get from it. excellent flow and rhyme here. I wish our vegies were doing as well as yours. I could picture this plot with those beans and you working there untiringly to collect those delicious morsels.

many thanks Lee, beans are lovely but not broad beans. These were Butter beans, the nice yellow ones. Dual purpose too, save the seeds and cook them like baked beans. Very nice indeed.

Wow... talking about gardening or life in general mate ? seems you have the real "The good life" there, but I betcha your Felicity Kendal runs rings around the real Felicity...
Cheers mate.

Actually this poem is fair dinkum garden only. I did have to pick all the beans. We have them coming out our ears at the moment. And, just by the way, Lis is no gardener. She loves the produce being so fresh but has no idea about growing it. Manys thanks mate.

Very cheerful and lovely poem.
You have 52 Celcius? Terrible! I can't imagine it. -

many thanks for your comments and yes it is hot. For about a week we have had a heat wave, hot days and hot nights with hot winds. temperatures are down tonight.

And doesn't it always taste better when it's been home grown! Good one Bob!

Every time a cocoanut John. Our bit of garden has been tremendous so far. Another few days of these heat wave conditions and it will be kaput, I think.
Many thanks for commenting, John.

Bob
The true joy is in reading your words. But alas, you know what they say about beans.

You are so right about the beans, my friend, but they do add variety to one's diet. I had to get them out as our temperatures are murderously hot these last few days. Summer is here with bells on. Cool change on the way. many thanks for you comments, and even with the story of beans, they are nice!!

Well penned Bob. Sounds like you have a wonderful vegie patch
We still have very strict water restrictions down here, so can't water a lot
It was 45 degrees here yesterday
Today is a more pleasant 32

Hi Julie, The only reason we have a garden is that we have our own supply. There is a bore just outside the garden fence. I spend a lot of time, early morning and late afternoon watering. Our temperature during the hot afternoon is 52 Celcius. We are hoping for a cooler day tomorrow. The vegie patch has been marvelous up to now, but this heat wave is murder. Appreciate your commenting and thoughts on the weather and water.

52???
I think I'd be taking up permanent residence in front of the air conditioner Bob. Wow...that's WAY TOO HOT
-
-
The air conditioner is very old and makes the same noise and vibration as an elephant tap dancing on a tin tub. I'm sure it will vibrate out of it's case if it were left on. We have three pedestal fans and make the most of them. We are still alive, I think.
