“Well look who we have here.” A voice calls from in front of us. The carrier of the voice steps out from behind the trees so we can see him. Rowtag. Great.
“Leave us alone Rowtag.” I say, trying to push past him, but Hassun pushes me back as he steps out as well.
“I don’t think so.” Hassun shakes his head.
“Look I have to go finish my chores, just let us go.” I say again.
“We’d rather not.” Rowtag states, looking Enapay over. “Rabbit all you could catch?”
“I bet he didn’t even catch it, weak Sioux.” Hassun adds.
“Did you have your girlfriend catch it for you Sioux?” Rowtag asks, his face right in front of Enapay’s.
“She’s not my girlfriend.” He states, staring Rowtag in the eye, jaw set.
“Is that a yes?” He shoves Enapay back, his muscles bulging as he makes contact.
“Why do you guys always do this?” I ask, trying to look bored.
“Why not? The Sioux doesn’t belong here so why should we let him feel like he does? Him and his whole family should become scarce.” Rowtag spits at me.
“Ever think-.”
“Kimi stop.” Enapay cuts me off. “Just let them be the idiots they are for a few moments.”
“If that’s what you want.” I say, shrugging. I lean back up against the closest tree.
“Yes, do what your man tells you.” Hassun grins at me.
I snap.
I lunge at him. I hate how women have to do what their men tell them. I hate that he thinks Enapay is telling me what to do, and I hate that he thinks I’m doing it for that reason.
I grab his shirt with my left hand and punch him in the face with my right. My knuckles crack as they hit his cheekbone. I pull back to hit him again, but my wrist is caught in mid air.
“You better watch what you do around me, girl.” Hassun hisses, his face inches from mine. I would hit him again, but he has my other wrist in his grip now too. So I spit.
It hits him below his left eye. As he lifts his hand to wipe it off I push my fist up one last time, hitting him in the nose. Blood sprays out, covering the front of his shirt.
“And you better watch what you say around me, boy.” I say as he bends over, holding his nose in both hands.
“Run along to the village now, leave the big boys to their work.” Rowtag states, holding a knife out toward Enapay. Where did it come from?
“What are you doing?” I ask, taking a step away from Hassun.
“Telling you to scram, that’s what I’m doing, now go!” He thrusts his chin toward the village, tightening his grip on his knife.
“Leave him alone Rowtag. We’ll leave, we won’t tell anyone.” I glance from the knife to his face over and over again. “Come on Enapay, let’s go.”
“No! You wanted to act tuff and now Sioux over here is going to pay. You broke Hassun’s nose and now I’m going to break Sioux’s face. Now get lost!” His short black hair drops in his eyes as he yells.
“Look, you’re going to attract attention to yourself-.”
“I say we keep her.” A voice cuts from behind me as my arms are wrapped behind my back. “Maybe we can break her face too.”
“You know we can’t hurt a girl Hassun.” Rowtag states. “At least, not in a way people can see.”
His face turns up in a grin. I stare at him blankly for a moment. Wait…Oh. My.
“What! I’ll kill you before you can even touch me!” I try to yank free of Hassun’s hold, but he just grips me tighter.
“Let her go Hassun. You know if you do anything to her Chief will have you exiled.” Enapay states, trying to save me.
“Who is he more likely to believe? The best hunters or the outsider and his girlfriend?” Rowtag sneers. “If anyone is exiled it will be you.”
Hassun pulls me deeper into the forest, Rowtag digging the knife into Enapay’s throat until he steps back as well. As we move back, I realize the chance of someone coming across us is less likely. Great.
“Here.” Rowtag tosses a small rope usually used to tie up game to Hassun as we come to a stop. “Tie her hands, we’re going to have ourselves some fun.”
“You better believe it.” His mouth twists up to the right as he wraps the rope around my wrists behind my back. “And you’re going to have fun too, right?”
“Of course, I’ll enjoy killing you.” I force a grin.
“You can only wish.” Hassun replies, pushing me to the ground. “Can we hurry up and get Sioux done with?”
In response Rowtag slides the tip of his knife down Enapay’s cheek. Enapay does nothing, like he didn’t even feel it. Blood quickly fills the gash and begins slipping down his face.
“What? Are you not going to fight back?” Rowtag questions.
“I can’t hurt you. I’m not from your tribe and it’s not my place to hurt anyone in it.” Enapay states, knowing that he could get him and his family kicked out, even though they practically are from our tribe.
Hassun laughs, his ponytail shaking with his head. “You couldn’t hurt us even if you were aloud.”
“Maybe, maybe not.” Enapay replies with a shrug.
“Look, my mother is going to be looking for me if I’m late. I’d love to stay and chat, but I really do have to go.” I say, trying to get to my feet.
Rowtag glances at me for a moment. “Deal with her.”
Hassun smiles and slips from Rowtag’s side. He shoves me back to the ground and crouches beside me.
“Leave her alone!” Enapay shouts, beginning toward me. Rowtag catches him by the back of his shirt and flings him to the ground. He jumps on top of him and places the edge of his knife against Enapay’s throat.
“I think we should have you watch.”
Something moves quickly in the bushes. Someone running. Rescue.
Rowtag screams as he disappears. Enapay stares up at the empty air above him, frozen in place. My breathing stops. He just vanished…into thin air.
“Rowtag?” Hassun whispers, glancing around the forest.
“You’ll see him shortly.” A female voice calls in response. A blur of white and brown rushes past us quickly.
“What was that?” I ask, unable to recognize my own voice.
“The white woman.” Enapay whispers with his brown eyes wide.
“What?” Hassun asks.
“An ancient tale. My father use to tell it to me when I was younger…I don’t believe it.”
“Believe it.” The voice calls again, jumping from the tree beside me. She flashes me a smile so quick I can barely see it before running off with Hassun in her arms. He screams as he’s whipped away into the shadows.
Enapay pulls me up from my frozen position. “We have to go.”
