Plunged into Nightmare

Child, why have you returned?
Your thoughts were broken
long ago;
fragmented dreams crunch underfoot.
Can't your hear the sound
of their weeping?

All the bright colors have faded
into monochromatic madness,
and the songs in our heads
are but a dull roar;
have you come to bask in our misery,
for surely you know,
we love company.

In darkness we have found ourselves,
faded beyond remembrance;
anyone who used to care
left us long ago
when innocence faded
into disbelief.

Yet still you tread upon the broken
pieces of our yesterday,
and light reflects in darkened corners
where the truth lies hidden away.
Will you believe it if you see it?

Our voices have faded with the memory;
a grey taint taken over the land.
Even your brilliance is as a candle
in a darkened cavern, black as death.
Was it your sickness that infected us,
those who reflect on the other side?
Is this your darkness holding us captive,
prisoners of the mind?

Trample upon our once-cherished beauty,
break it further into dust;
your body and mind were wasted long ago,
and with it, our existence.
So why do you remain?
We whisper in voices reserved for demons,
and yours are what haunts us so.

Child, though that title has turned untrue,
what did we do to deserve such sentence?
We were the ones who whisked you away,
on the edge of a dream,
to find ourselves plunged into nightmare.
