Last night in California
The smoke rose so high
I called to check up on you
To see if you were alright
The message was the same as always

The fire spread so quickly
I didn't know what to think
I haven't heard your voice in ages
Tears fell each time I blinked
The TV said so many had died
My messages stayed unanswered
So I grabbed my things and decided to go for awhile

Yours was the only one I dialed that night
Fifteen times in a row
Your voice seemed so distant
Your voice a memory lost in time
I prayed and prayed
All night long
"LORD please don't let this fire take him away"

You weren't there to greet me as you always did
A warm embrace, a long loving kiss
All that's left was dust, ash, and brokenness
