My Bucket's Got A Hole In It (Silver Trophy)

I had a very long list of dreams

A bucket full of things to do

But it seems it’s sprung a leak

And the dreams are slipping through

Among those dreams were things

I someday planned but, no

It seems life gets in the way

Making progress way too slow

I’ve seen much of the world

But not nearly enough for me

I want to watch my grandkids grow

And their babies, too you see

I’ve sailed the Nile, gazed ’cross the Rhine

Climbed a mountain high

I’ve watched the sun rise and set

And birds flying ‘cross the sky

Time goes by so fast these days

Leaving many hopes behind

If I could just go back a ways

I’d make dreams of a different kind

Ones that wouldn’t lose their grip

The  hands of time would hold on tight

Travel, a novel, all in the works

I’d dream my dreams of hope and light

But alas, my bucket’s got a hole in it

Just wont keep those dreams inside

I guess they’ll go with me to my grave

But they’ll be around for the next ride

Dee Garner

Thank you At my age I sometimes think about the things I've done and not done, thankful for a little time still left to accomplish some of those 'undone' things

Don't fret about missing the contest, Susan. I'm sure everyone and especially Hugh, understand that sometimes other things have to come first. I hope you're not considering taking a chance on traveling to the doctor tomorrow, what with the ice and snow. It seems that a lot of the northern US have been hit bad this winter. In Washington where my family live they've had extreme wearther there, too... flooding, mud slides, I-5 closed in places because of the flooding. And cold and snow along with the rain. As long as I lived in northwest Washington it never got that bad. And even in northeast Texas where my Dad lives and also a couple of dear friends, they've had awful weather. My friend/sis Morningstar123 on allpoetry lives there about a hundred miles north of my Dad and she's been telling me about the ice storm. And they were both hit hard by Hurricane Ike.

Sorry, didn't mean for this to be such a long reply to your comment Just take care, Sis and be extra careful.

      love and
      Dee

SO MANY OF US have a hole in our bucket.
I like your poem. It makes me glad for the things
the character has done and a little sad that all
wishes weren’t fulfilled. Good luck in Contest #40.

Great and catchy title. Isn't that the truth? Interesting thing for me right now is I see my young life being played over through my grandaughter. My thought is, I have the wonderful opportunity to imprint upon her memory. She's six now and has written four stories and is quite the artist as well. She has a wonderful voice and takes her piano lessons seriously. Who knows, as you reflect, perhaps my dreams will become possible through her.

Enjoyed this very much. Good luck to you,
    ~Mary O

Perhaps one saving grace of not being able to fulfill all of our hopes and dreams is that we can live them through our children and grandchildren. I have lots of those critters including some great grandchildren tp help me live mine And it's wonderful to see that they've added some of their own dreams and hopes.

    Excellent fare.

Life is nothing more than all the tiny little dreams we leave behind. Yes, time goes by fast. Quote is from the new Cint Eastwood movie, "Gran Torino". Best Wishes.

Thank you, Wesley I didn't know until yesterday that The Bucket List is actually the name of a movie. I'd like to see it and also Gran Torino, which you mention. I've been seeing the previews for it on TV and it looks like a good movie... and of course with Clint Eastwood in it, it's a must see for me.

Hello Dee, How wonderful that you've traveled many places, I saw the movie The Bucket List and enjoyed it, but wouldn't want to try what they did. I think your commonsense was right when it kicked in at seventy, even at my age (46)I'd only go for the safe things in my list. LOL we'll leave it to the real young ones eh?
Good luck Dee, this is a beaut poem.

I didn't even know that The Bucket List was a movie... thought it was just something Yem made up. so my poem may not even have anything to do with what it was meant to be. Oh well... what ya see is what ya get

It's a great movie Dee it's great and it's exactly what you wrote about. At start of movie you think it's going to be crap but stick with it, it'll make you laugh and it'll make you cry. It has Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman in it,take note of the guy in the snow at the beginning as it's significance at the end.

Dear Dee, Things sure change as we get older, we can't do the things we could when we were younger, but even though your bucket has a hole in it the dreams always remain.
    Beautiful poem Dee.

I have the opposite problem, mine is so dang full and the road so rough
that they keep sloshing out with every step...

This winter is one that I wish I was a polar bear, in fact if the temps keep
falling and breaking records I keep wondering where that global
warming is as I could sure use some about now...lol

    Hugs...Eddy

I do believe you meant to add a "next" to that last line

But alas, my bucket’s got a hole in it
Just wont keep those dreams inside
I guess they’ll go with me to my grave
But they’ll be around for the (next) ride

Well hey sis, just cause that dang bucket got a hole in it don't mean you can't have big dreams...ones too big to get a way...and the important ones never get away...the ones we really want to keep..oh! ... it give me great pleasure to point out a mis-spelled word... "Rhine" river...if you please..wow don't think I was ever able to do that before...felt good... Good luck in the voting...

Thanks for pointing out the wayward Rhine River mispelling to me... now I get to point out that you did a wayward rose... "F does not make a rose but : F does Don't feel too bad though, I've done the same typo before.

Thanks for the read and the comment

    Dear Dee,

I'm sorry that your bucket's got a hole
through which some of your aspirations leak
but, with a steady heart and stoic soul,
I'm sure you'll keep those you most keenly seek.

I too have many dreams in which I yearn
for spots that I have visited before
to which I know I never will return
that haunt me with their memories of yore.

And, in this world there are so many places
which I would love to visit if I could
to see new sights, new spectacles, new faces....
If I could only go to them, I would.

But, as you say, Time passes now so fast
and flies with greater speed from year to year.
Those spectacles, so splendid in the past,
will never be the same again, I fear.

So, though it leaks new opportunities,
my bucket cannot lose my memories.

Thankyou for your wonderful poem which deserves lots of votes from the other entrants.
Applause, love and hugs, XXX Hugh (R.)

See ya at the weigh station up a head. You and I both!  But curse those incidents and accidents that punched a hole in our buckets. They formed our itinerary for us. Partly by choice, partly by the hand of fate. This is a fantastic reflection in poetic form of wistful endevours of life.

Dreams can get away when we are concentrating on the concerns of daily life. "Bucket with a hole in it" is a fine metaphor for how things slip away when we don't notice; but looking at what you have done, it is more than a lot of people! Dreams of a different kind might be too big to leak out.
I like the poem a lot, Dee, best wishes in the contest.

Dreams are elusive creatures aren't they? Perhaps M'Lady Darlene could weave you a dream catcher too. Good luck in the contest.
