Squirrel Migration

I saw a squirrel migration
this autumn.
I counted them as they rolled by,
yes, I said rolled,
they were on roller skates.

All ninety-four skates,
squeaking
across the tattered leaves,
rotten from a fall's abuse.

Three hundred and seventy six
little wheels,
turning constantly
with the forty-seven
little faces screwed up
with concentration,
trying to move in time
for the winter coming
in the wind.

I know you think I'm crazy,
But I saw a squirrel migration
this autumn.

Hee hee! You must know about my not-really-secret love of squirrels! I like the mental image that I see while I'm reading this.... it's actually a lot like that one scene in the Lion King where Scar is singing 'Be Prepared' and all of the hyenas are marching past... except it's on a neighborhood road and they are squirrels skating past... I'm so weird. I do in fact like the randomness.
