Lion's Paw

Missing image
daring and bold, far from pennyroyal's glade
height of spring through autumn's shade.
dazzling stars, from cottony felt tips
sprung from between limestone cliffs.

clustered cupolas, bunched testament gives
the trials of body, mind and spirit lives.
rewarding the brave with bits of hope-
you've come this far, life's no gentle slope.

a lioness shorn, defrocked of looks vain
hollowed clean, licking wounds from pain.
see me now, as I'm gradually revived-
disease, loss, death, heartbreak-I survived!

Author notes

Edelweiss is the flower. "Lion's Paw" is its folk name.
It symbolizes daring and noble courage.

I feel that I have undergone many challenges and dared myself to take on some very calculated and self-imposed risks over the course of my lifetime. I feel that I have become more enriched and blessed, and a better person for it. Most recently, I have survived cervical cancer. I may not be quite as inaccessible as this lovely flower, but I have been told that I am "rare and hard to find," as far as my personality.

*I dedicate this piece also to Janice M Pickett- who in my humble opinion, also personifies this rare and lovely flower.*

Edelweiss IPA: /ˈeɪdlˌvaɪs/ (Leontopodium alpinum), one of the best-known European mountain flowers, belongs to the sunflower family (Asteraceae). The name comes from German edel (meaning noble) and weiß (meaning white). The scientific name, Leontopodium means "lion's paw", being derived from Greek words leon (lion) and podion (diminutive of pous, foot).  It is also the unofficial national flower of Switzerland.

licking wounds from pain ... I love that line. I love wild flowers and plan to have my very own meadow this spring/summer. I'm wondering now which flower is me ... this contest was wonderful as was this poem. Well deserving of the gold

Wow, 'pennyroyal's glade', I lived in 'The Glade' as a boy, and this word 'pennyroyal', seems idyllic to use, and the trait seems like from the offset, a bane as such, which is surrounded by folklore or superstition. Here, I believe what is certainly an insight of inner strength. Nice words.

    Good Effort

I would just work on the rhythm a bit to tighten it.

    Well done.

Awwwwwwww You made me cry. What a beautiful and lovely gift. I so seldom receive anything so touching. But then someone as wonderful as yourself would think of others in this unselfish way.
I am so honored to share this with you. THANK YOU. Yes we are survivors. Cancer is simply an awakening of the power we DO have inside each and everyone of us. In fact I could go as far as to say. In my case it was a blessing in disquise. It woke me up to what I was truly capable of.
