This child, thin as a stalk of reaped corn,
stricken with the disease of poverty and
abandonment.. She walks limply on barefeet,
dressed in rags, all knobby knees and
pointy elbows, carrying that wide-eyed
sunken look of starvation..
****
She is very young, this child of squalor,
and cannot possibly understand why she has
to live in a world where one child has a
life full of love and plenty while another
lives as she does, on the edge of death each
day..
****
She has long accepted the angry and painful
growlings of her empty stomach and the foul
and putrid taste of what little garbage she
can find to sustain her tiny, frail body..
****
Does she dream of a day when all people will
see her bright potential, see what she might become?
A great leader, a masterful healer, an Einstein,
Another Hawking..?
Not likely, she is just another broken doll in a
sea of discarded toys..
Author notes
What do you think? Do you think if she were white and born to wealthy parents she would be in this condition? Do you think if she were born here in America, the odds for her survival would be so low?

You brought me to tears here. I love the way you brought out all the injustice and inequality.

Just another broken doll in a/sea of discarded toys....wow, this is extraordinary and hopefully we can get enough people to see it that it will make a difference. thanks so much for entering...you are wonderful.

"Disease of poverty & abandonment"//"Sunken look of starvation"; 2 of my favorite lines.
The ending stanza was quite nice as well, a bead of hope shattered within the reality that just like many others, "she is just another broken doll in a sea of discarded toys".
Good luck in the content.
