Line stretched long and movement slow
People stand in helpless daze,
Some have stood from sunrise glow
Waiting in this human maze
Money spent and unemployed,
Hunger burning deep inside,
Destiny a hopeless void
On the streets they must reside.
Forman takes one man aside
Steers him through the open gate,
Probably he won’t confide
What his chances? Has to wait!
Anxious workmen on the job
Pause to watch this hope filled soul
Would he from these workmen rob?
Pass them now the begging bowl.
Since the nations finance crash
People fight to keep their place
Hold on desperately to cash
Fear redundancy to face.
Crowds outside gaze on in fear,
Then respond with muted sigh
For at home their families dear
Need this job for food supply.
Hope filled man returns with smile
Clutching his employment card,
They gave him a one month trial
But they’ll start him in the yard
Old Joe hears them call him out,
Wearily he answers call,
From him hear heartbroken shout,
Calloused hands clutched in a ball.
Such is life for every soul
Some climb up and others fall,
Common good forgotten goal
For our world’s no place for all.
