The Mate's Place

I went up to Gary's place where he was working in his shed
Fixing his old Volkswagon, which is a briliant shade of red.
I gave him what I had to give; an extra pair of willing hands.
Held bolts and nuts, passed tools to him, listened to what he said
Beat the dents out of the mudguards, fixed that broken fan,
Generally helped him in his quest to restore that old tin can.

He really did not need my help, he knew far more than I
He needed some one to talk to, to help the time pass by.
Friendship comes in many forms, each has a different name,
But whichever way you look at it, it still remains the same
There are no preconditions, no rules for you to break
Give whatever you have to give, you can't make mistakes.

The V W is an old convertible and a real treasure. Just needs an good overhaul and a new coat of paint. I doubt he will ever sell it. It's too rare and is in operating order right now. many thanks for your comments, I do appreciate them.

Very well said, Bob. A great write that describes what friendship is all about. Your poem put me there with you both fixing old Herbie. That to me sounds like an extremely worthy cause indeed, and there is nothing better than a mate being there to spur you on with a hand of friendship. This flowed beautiful with excellent rhythm and rhyme and I just loved it. Just brilliant. Sorry....Can't see anything here that needs fixing and definately don't change it.

Thanks for you comprehensive comment. It is a worthy cause. the V W is an old convertible and apart from being left in a shed for years its all present and correct. Just needs a bit of panel beating, a coat of paint and some T L C. It's the excuse we have to spend a bit of time together swapping stories and fixing the world's problems.

Nice work, Bob. Friendship is a blessing, and like a good wine, deepens and becomes richer with age.

Many many thanks Mercedes, friendship is like a good wine in a lot of ways. The VW is not completed yet so there will be many more days like that one. I look forward to it.

Exactly my sentiments I don't get to visit as often as I used to but that is when the telephone comes in handy. Calling friends or friends calling me, for some reason we always find a "reason" besides chit chat, even though we know there doesn't need to be a reason at all.

s and best wishes always... ~Genie~

Friends don't need to have a "reason" to visit. The fact that a friend lives there is enough. I do not use my phone much at all. You can't see the light in your friends eyes over the phone. Thanks for a supportive comment, I appreciate it.

yes John, it is true. You can't buy or sell friendship, yet it is a valuable thing to have.
Thanks for your support, my friend.

Many thanks David, I have been the beneficiary of friendship a number of times in my life and it is supreme, no doubt. Glad you like my dog. He's right beside me at the moment. german shepherd/ Aussie red Cattle dog. He's 8 years old now, loyal and faithful like the ones you read about.

My how at times the simple little things can bring on such light and wisdom. A page one article? Perhaps not. But wise beyond any front page story my friend.

From where I sit it's a simple statement of fact. Wise? Who knows, but it works for me and I get a great deal of pleasure and education just helping out. The next one is a "T" model ford with wooden spokes. Here, I do have some valuable skills. I can make and fit the spokes. That's bye the bye, the friendship is the important bit. Thank you once more for your support and encouragement, my friend.

Nah; not finished yet, then there is the "T" model ford. I have the job of making the wooden spokes for the "T" model wheels. The VW is a convertible and its going to be a real winner. All in good time.
