The battle has ceased now,
After fighting for so long
We lay you down to sleep.
Brave warrior, keep in mind,
Though you have fallen
You still won the war.
With legacies abundant,
JR, you will not slip away.
Your memory fresh in the minds
Of your wife and children.
Your name on the tongues
Of your sisters and friends.
Cancer, though it struck you down,
Did not take your faith.
With the Lord by your side,
You fought with your soul,
Battling with all your might.
Do not think of it as losing,
Even if your last breath escaped you,
There are no losers in this life
When it is God calling you home.
For the rest of our lives
And until we see you again,
Rest well in the arms of the angels.
From Kansas to Missouri,
Texas to Oklahoma,
Your spirit will be felt
In the strong southern winds
Each time you sigh from Heaven;
Missing you just as you miss us.
The battle has ceased now JR,
Though it was an illness
Which took your shell from us,
It is your spirit and your faith
That remains with us.
Although be it the battle was lost,
You JR, you still won the war.
The body be it merely a shell,
We will see you once more.

This is Melissa, I wanted to thank you for your poem. You don't know how close you are to my family with his sisters in Texas and fighting his battle in Oklahoma with "The cancer treatment center of America". It was like you knew him. Thank you is not big enough for the poem!

I loved how you wrote this as if you were talking to JR. Very nicely done!
I could feel the emotion pouring through your words... awesome job. I know that Melissa and her family will feel the love from all who've entered this contest, as well as yourself.
