Philosophy of a Moth

Since she was a caterpillar,
this butterfly drew her eye.
Stained-glass-brilliant Monarch
flying firebrand colors;

Magnificent,
        [slightly smoldering]
              checkered-burning wings.

On a star-crossed Sunflower
one rosy-dawn intoxication,
she sipped nectar with her king.

Flames of castle-building desire,
lit romance in her thorax.

He, 'tho fond of her and flattered,
was hardly serious about their fling.
Flittered off without a thought
for poor little Nightshade Moth.

Her penchant for nobility;
blazing fascinations and
lightning-rod decisions,
left her sighing reveries.

Following her instincts
might seem a foolish thing.
Impetuous and reckless,
risking such fragile collateral~
as gossamer limbs for bliss.

Born to live in obscure shadows,
drawn perpetually to the light.
Nothing to do with wrong or right,
it simply is her flight.

Captivating imagery, so sad. You made the butterfly/moth a poignant story of human love. Beautifully written with a deft touch for poetic devices.

Ah, well, monarchs and moths have lives to which they must be true in the end. At most they can only notice one another, but neither can adapt to the other's life. To be all that one can be is not to be everything to everyone.

And with all the flutter, the kings included, it comes down to the last stanza.

"Born to live in obscure shadows,
    drawn perpetually to light.
Nothing to do with wrong or right,
    it simply is her flight."

It simply IS her flight. Such a beautiful way to end this poem. ~Pamela

Splendid, Hon.. It seems like we humans are sometimes no different then the lowly moth, forever hungering for things that glitter in the light.. I loved it, well done!

Bright and shining things have always drawn me to reach out my hand, sometimes getting burned, sometimes not. Yes the hunger is there isn't it?

What a beautiful narrative that is filled with captivating original imagery. I love the feel of this poem and I was especially impressed with this stanza:
    “On a star-crossed Sunflower
    one rosy-dawn intoxication,
    sipping nectar with her king.”

    Love,
    Amera♥

I found it to be quite humorous by the end of the sixth stanza and would have left it there.
