Diamonds are a girl’s best friend
Or so the saying goes
As I watch emotional wealth
Sliding down your cheeks
Like the gemstones glittering
In the wan embarrassed smile
Of a pale tired yellow sun.
I wondered at the price it cost
For each diamond drop you made
And who it was that inspired
That crafted work upon your face.
I sigh and open my arms
As wide as the endless sky
And pull you to my chest
Absorbing the wealth you hide.
