A child naturally knows when it’s time to rhyme,
Be it at breakfast, supper, recess or dinner time.
Cannot help but play in his steamy alphabet soup,
Dreaming up words, spelling this and that in a scoop.
Every child’s a sponge for learning to read and write,
For some it’s a challenge, but they keep up the fight.
Gotta encourage them with proper learning toys and tools,
Have to help with homework and send them to good schools.
In some cases kids get frustrated and can’t get it done.
Just encourage them to keep writing. Show them it’s fun!
Kneel on the floor and whip out those colorful letters.
Let them practice vocabulary and being little go-getters.
Make them think big and imagine their wildest dream.
Now have him write it down and watch him just beam.
On to fishing – have him cast for one letter at a time.
Put them together and see what he gets. Maybe slime?
Quietly read together and have him sound out each word.
Remember not to get frustrated if he gets overly deterred.
Some kids see the alphabet and take right off at an early age.
They never stop talking or reading and they’ll write off the page.
Understand that all kids develop at their own special pace.
Very harmful would be to believe that learning is a race.
Why, I think my seven year old son is smarter than I am already.
Xylophone is a word I fight with, but I graduated summa cum laude.
You see, spelling is not an indication of someone’s smarts.
Zany as it may seem, education is not where it even starts.

This poem is so well written that it befuddles me. The flow that you make look as extreme ease. Great job. Thanks for entering and good luck!

What a great poem.
It is fun, light, and educational. I'll have to pass this on to the teachers I know. Good job, Kim!
