The anguish of their love

Missing image
When in their youth they played each day,
their games of war and passion
the sort of games that children play
combat was the fashion

She was the damsel in distress,
and he the brave strong knight
she might be a barbarian queen
at lovers side she'd fight

But always they were twined as one
a tale of love en-scrolled
an epic written in their hearts
a love song oft retold

And, they grew up to love so strong
they waited for the day
they'd share the vows and promises
together ride away

into the fairy tale romance
they dreamed so many nights
when all the warring games were done
and there were no more fights

Then, came that horrid family feud
his love so long was torn
for hers was of another blood
and he the other born

That morning when the clans did fight
they stood on opposite lines
the love they felt was not to be
their fate had new designs

The two with weapons in their hands
went into fire of war
and they were enemies at last
no fantasy as before

She drew her dagger and she threw
into his heart it flew
he fell there at the feet of her
he'd loved so long and true

She took his head into her hands
and cried at what she'd done
he lay before her dying now
this love, her only one

The fires of the battles ebbed
the clans retired the field
the blood of many left behind
upon their sword and shield

But, there too was another death
her heart had died that day
when she in duty had to choose
and threw her life away.
