Santayana states "The family is one of nature's masterpieces. "
after surviving yet another Christmas Season, I feel I must agree more with George Burns who subscribed to the notion that "Happiness is having a large, loving, caring, close-knit family in another city."
My impassioned feeling for biological families has dimmed over the passage of years. Especially for mine, I love them all, but from a distance and one at a time.
I have though, necessity and distance created an extended family of choice for my grandson, including an impassioned but aging maverick artist grandfather, an interesting if eccentric collection of aunts and uncles, and livestock.
The absence of physical and monetary obligations make gatherings much less stressful and and less expensive. I actually feel the same way about husbands and kids and well, I must be either a really bad person or a lunatic.Goats and sheep on the other hand love you anyway as long as you remember to feed them.
