This Old House

Missing image

This old house holds precious memories
A bed time story and saying our prayers

Tucking us in with warm hugs and kisses

Four young girls snuggled safely in bed

My sisters and I playing hide and seek

With the sun shining brightly overhead
Birds serenading us from a nearby tree

Watching our dog splashing in the creek

Wrapped gifts under our Christmas tree
The aroma of cookies baking in the oven

Family joining hands around the table
Thanking the lord for all that we have

A roaring fire on a cold winter's night

As the flames dance in splendid colors
We popped corn the old fashion way

Heartfelt memories to cherish forever

    This was beautiful;

I know nothing about the form that you used, but the poem itself -

Contains so many memories and beautiful images, it was like getting a brief glimpse into someone else's life, like when you go past houses on a train, and glance into their windows for a brief second -

    Great job, thanks for entering

Recalls the most pleasant of childhood memories which are attached to a house, but drawn from the lives people lived within its walls and grounds. As it should be, the old house is like the box in which so many good things have come. Without them, it would just be an unremarkable structure.

Paloszoo has asked me to co-judge with an eye to form so this comment is centred on form, my opinion of the rest won't count in the judging.

As a French form syllable count and repetition mount much above meter and rhyme in a retourne, indeed both those traditional parts of English formal poetry are optional. The repeat lines are re-used qute naturally here and the poem is exactly to form, great stuff!

This is a very interesting poem which I find difficult to understand but it reads very well. I guess after I have read a few, I will figure it out. This piece had a really warming feeling to it, and very homely which is inviting. Well done and the very best of luck in the contest.
