The Faint Hum

Eyes vigorously scan the horizon
for the slightest movement
that might stir my soul
into retrieving lost vitality

Rain beats down on the pavement
so forcefully that the rhythm
echoes across the square
like the sound from a hundred drummers

Sirens peal amid the wind
ebbing and flowing relentlessly
as though this were the beginnings
of a destructive tide

Finally I see you in the distance
walking toward me with pride
a pensive smile now drawn
apon my anxious heart

Oblivious to world of chaos
surrounding us in this moment
the only thing that matters
is being held in your embrace

all other life, the rain, everything ....
is nothing but a faint hum against my skin
