Gallows-like,
the dark beams of my bedroom balcony
are silhouetted against the dawn.
Restless, half-awakened by the dawn chorus,
I lie and watch the turquoise of first light
become suffused with fiery gold.
Unseen magpies carol from nearby trees,
whilst kookaburras laughingly rejoice
at the passing of another night.
I am another day old.
