green leaves

under the snow
green leaves still shine

remains of summer

in cold days
waiting for spring

Author notes

Saw that while taking a walk in the zoo.
Very cold weather, lots of snow and no people to see, it was
the best walk I've had there.

now that I have written and read more of the form, I see the subtle side of this... a green lingers in winter, a piece of summer, waits for spring...and the odd occurrence - snow on green- seems to fit so naturally n the cycle, the tanka has a wonderful pivot ... I am enjoying tanka and haiku...h

I just wrote a comment for this but I think I lost it, somehow, so here goes again. I read a few poems of yours but I seemed to stop at this one. It seemed the shortest of those that I read but somehow said more to me. You managed to include three seasons, the past, present AND future in this little gem - wow, some feat. I like, too, the way you introduced the coldness, reminded us of the warmth of summer then pulled us back into the cold again with the anticipation and promise that there will be warm days again, lovely.

This is beautifully concise. You managed three seasons; the past present AND future all wrapped up in so few words, summer sandwiched between snow and cold. A wonderful piece.
I loved your moon poem too, sadly we cannot set it at the moment.

My most memorable walks are without people too.. at the beach, on the sand... at sunset... the most calming times of my life.

I got such a visual (not even from the picture). I could see the leaves hiding under the snow, shivering, waiting for the sun to come out and rescue them.

So nicely done.. in so little words..

No delicious deciduous moments yet but evergreen evergreen ones still arise.
    Nice piece.

This photo captures a lot...green among the bare limbs, I like the idea of seasons like layers, and a part is left inside like seeds waiting for spring...very expressive tanka...PK

    Reminds me of strong spirit,
    holding on, surviving
    despite the odds,
    claiming the future.

  • I have a deciduous bush much like this one in front of my house. It, too, is still clinging to summer and a good amount of green. Aren't we that way, though? It is a marvel to me, because normally this one loses its leaves far before now. I like its determination, resilience.

Thanks for sharing the pic and the lovely poem. We have no snow here and haven't really had too much this season. I miss its pristine covering and all the fun it can bring, too.

Waiting, though, is often a good thing. We can learn so much while hanging on. Don't you think?

it is wonderful to see some green -- our evergreens are even thickly covered in snow here, lol....i'm thinking of taking a pic because it is insane how much snow we have here right now.

Ha... I don't feel so bad now because even nature is confused. Spring could not come soon enough. Enjoyed it!
