He used to wrestle with changes
He used to wrestle with the chains
He looks back on tomorrows
With his own hatred and rage.
He used to beckon all the demons
For the sake of getting even
With a madman and his anger
Thinking revenge was all-redeeming.
Though he knows he could do better
He knows he could do more
It's just so easy to follow
In the footsteps of those before.
He used to reason with his sanity
He used to reason with his fear
He looks back on yesterdays
With his own blank stare.
He used to conjure up nirvana
For the sake of getting free
From a madman and his anger
Thinking escape was the flee.
Though he knows he could do better
He knows he could do more
He's captured and bound
By a past he can't ignore.

Outstanding write. Absolutely true. Sometimes its hard to change when all you know is abuse. It can come in many forms, beatings, alcoholicism, drugs, etc. I really liked this stanza:
Though he knows he could do better
He knows he could do more
It's just so easy to follow
In the footsteps of those before.
