Licorice Voo Doo

The ice-cream store sign read, “Unique Sensation!”
A tantalizing twist in a strange combination.
What were they thinking creating that dish?
An eerie concoction of black licorice.

It sounded like such an intriguing new taste.
Vanilla cream mixed with black swirling paste.
Soon after devouring my delectable cone,
I flashed a big smile, and the damage was shown.

The customers cringed at the horrible sight,
as if I were haunting their Halloween night.
I looked in the mirror at the dark hefty toll,
inside of my mouth had become black as coal.

It looked pretty bad, I couldn’t deny,
as if I were poisoned by black liquid dye.
I still have to wonder, why that flavor didn’t last,
why it dropped from the menu so incredibly fast.

Perhaps all the screams, or the outspoken cries.
Perhaps from the laughter in onlookers eyes.
But likely it was, when the workday was done,
they counted the sales, which totaled just one.

Should it ever return, that flavor so fine,
you know I’ll be back to be first-one-in-line.
Until then I’m satisfied simply to dream,
of that flavor called Licorice Voodoo ice-cream.

Author notes

Licorice Voodoo is the first poem-story I ever wrote. It is based on an experience as a kid, when my Mom used to take me to get licorice ice-cream that no one else liked. I still look for it, ... have never seen it again. Kevin Pace WordsDoMatter

This is a great childhood remembrance. I always tell people when they say they are not writers that they should put things in their memories down in poetry, prose or story so that those that follow get a taste of who they were a person once we are gone. This is a fine example of what I am referring to. Just a memory of childhood that is light and yet sheds light on things that stick out about your childhood. I am finding we have a considerable in common regarding the way we view communicating by verse. Great entry and be well. RC

I was disappointed to read some poems of yours that were nowhere near as good as the ones I'd already read.. I was then pleased to notice that I'd clicked 'Next in contest', rather than 'Next by WordsDoMatter', and the less great poems weren't even yours. So, no, yours are all good (that's a bit of an assumption, since I've still only read a few)

In your poems, I find many lines that I decide I really like, but then I find more, and then it just becomes a really great poem. Lots of poems have a good line or two, yours are full of lines that make me excited to be reading them, which is rare.

You're going straight to my favourites list. I hope I read more of your stuff next time!

As for ice cream, I was simply amazed at the variety when I went to Slough with a friend (in case you're from far away, Slough is a county in England, UK, or something along those lines). And that was in Slough! I'd love to see the selection at an ice cream place in a massive city where the selection is endless. I'd just get Strawberry though.

      honestly

this is not my best work... far from it.. as you can see in the AN it was the 1st one I ever wrote 6 years ago... so I'm glad it's not very good (my word), that shows I have improved. I welcome you to read on... as many as you like. Just let me know how each one makes you feel - that is what I'm looking for - thanks Kevin

Licorice Ice Cream?! That is probably the most unique flavor I have ever heard of. And I know how it feels to have a childhood favorite sort of vanish. Ben & Jerry's had one when I was about 11 years old called Bolvinity Divinity - it was vanilla ice cream with fudge swirls and both dark chocolate and white chocolate (are you ready for this?) cows. lol.

Your poem brings back awesome memories. Keep up the good work.

but that's good, since it was my first one... maybe I have improved... (actually, I know I have, I wrote some pretty bad stuff whern I first started). thanks for your comments - Kevin
