Botticelli's Cloak

Missing image
It is in his eyes you see,
the color of a lark's wing.
Hooded eyelids mask true emotion.
Yet in that jaded half smile,
the wonder of the miraculous vision lies.

He can see my soul
and wonders at my unease.
Epiphany.
The Silk roads journey,
leads, but only for so far.

Now, it is just the star that remains,
ever brighter leading East.
His cloak once so splendid,
now covered with burnished dust
from camels threading dune to dune.

Month after month searching.
Esoteric astrological projections,
portend the birth of our heavenly king.
But he  must see with his own eyes,
if this is truly such a thing.

Author notes

thoughts on the Magi by a skeptic
and on your birthday I knew you had the sojourners look also
many years ago, when I first saw this painting in the Ufftizi Gallery in Florance. I felt as he was looking right through me, so in your spiritual travelers I though perhaps he should gaze through you to wee the splendid soul you are. Happy Birthday Otter, in Celtic Mythology the Otter DOBHRAN knows that you need to play and work, he knows he can still catch a salmon while playing in t he stream, thanks for being my friend

I paid scant attention to your notes

but the poem is clever in its interpretation of the painting and the significance of the Magi. The epiphany you engage is well-expressed. The Magus " must see with his own eyes,
if this is truly such a thing."
You have done a difficult thing: made something memorable of a great painting.
    Thank you for entering.

      My humble thanks

The painting first captivated me in Florence, the look in his eye, haunting, I have remembered it after many passing years, I was delighted to find it as one of your prompts.
      thanks you

    Another nice birthday gift!

I peeked at the comments and discovered who the author was. You fullfilled my desire to have something to contemplate. An interesting perspective on the Three Magi story that was well worth the read.

This is lovely. I love the detail of the painting you chose and your interpretive tribute. Today is the epiphany here in Germany and I expect to see a band of children dressed as the Three Kings pass by at any moment how, with one carrying the star.
