Wonderful Thing

He isn't the handsomest lad in the world,
And he's not as rich as a king,
But it doesn't matter because he is good
At one very wonderful thing.

Yes, my lad cannot give me bright jewels to wear,
Or dress me in velvet so fine.
But as long as he's good at that wonderful thing
I vow that he'll always be mine.

Now all you young lasses who still are unwed
Should keep this in mind as you look:
If you can't get a lad who is handsome or rich
Make certain that he's a good cook!

I wrote this for a "bawdy ballads" contest. It won, even though it's only suggestive, not at all bawdy.

    Ya' gotta love it !

and I did ... a suggestive poem that reads well and yet the last line says it all ... If he can't master cooking he will not master looking ... at anything!

  • Mmm'... I do adore SCA inspired songs. Reminds me of quite a few gents I knew a few years back, which is totally awesome. I always loved when the bards came to events... because, quite frankly, the two our kingdom did have weren't all that great. They were more parodies than original works... which is fine when you're a kid, but not so much as an adult.

And I'm rambling something fierce, so I suppose I should stop now before I make a total fool of myself. x3 A wonderful ballad with a comical twist.

that's funny and kind of ironic i think, my husband and i don't have much these days but he is a certified chef. although i find my husband handsome, some may beg to differ, he is not a typical young woman's husband, then again, i am not all that typical..

  • Awesome!!!!!

I'm new here, so I'm not yet much exposed to poems. But so far, this was the nicest I've seen.
    Great job.

I love this one. Your bawdy songs are awesome. And that's two songs/poems now that you've said "It won first place" or "I won" in the author notes. Hint. Hint.

    Three clappies for suggestivity!
