Kites

Missing image
Give me a kite of every color
And point me to the sky
There I’ll paint you a rainbow
But don’t stop and ask me why

It’s just something I was born with
That love of kites deep inside
Flying sheets in the wind
Fills my heart with pride

Especially the ones I built
With these two weathered hands
Soaring right beside the store-bought
In brightly colored bands

Red, green, blue and yellow
And all hues in between
Tattered tails of crimson
Across the sky are seen

Like chalk upon a sidewalk
They trace the sky so wide
A-dipping and a-swooping
As on the wind they ride

I can hear gasps of joy
From the children on the ground
Picking out their favorites
Their spirit knows no bound

Oh, could they fly among them
Those colored sheets of wind
Or perhaps just hold the strings
And feel the tugs again

That night they dream of flying
In the blue streaked by sun
Loose to roam the clouds
Freedom once more begun

Here a dip, there a dive
A bright wiggle in the blue
Staring down upon us
Their dreams of flight come true

Take us back one more time
And let us feel the cotton cord
That ties us to our flying soul
And brings us closer to the Lord
