Earth

I sit, predictably, alone.
I'm off in my own little corner
away from all of the noise, and the foolishness
that is life.

I sit in an unnoticed haven
surrounded by trees
covered in moldering leaves
and sweet dark earth.
Not tile, not hard wood, not ceramic, not carpet.
Just earth, as it is meant to be.
Beautiful, and untouched by anything
but my own two tresspassing feet.

I lay down
and dig my fingers into the dank leaves and earth.
My mother would positively screech
if she saw the state of my nails.
I'm not one to care about such things.
The sharp sweet scent of freshly turned earth
hits my nose with a fist of sensational thought.
I'm remembering.

I'm lost within that earth
the dirt digging itself deeper within me
grinding into my skin with the persistence
that can only be matched by water
carving its way into
a seemingly impenetrable surface.
It carves out a place for itself
within my heart.
A canyon of wonders.
A canyon of peace.
Unimaginably vast and beautiful.

My soul is a bird
living within the caves and caverns
sheltered by the wonder and majesty
of this very world.
The earth that is my haven.
The earth that pulls me away from myself
to something greater
and far beyond comprehension.
