Did You Take The Time To Cry?

Today you should have faced the truth,
did you take the time to cry?
And mourn the flower of faded youth,
and the things that passed you by?

Or did you turn that stubborn head,
from the things you should have learned?
From the wounded loves you left for dead,
to the bridges behind you burned.

Author notes

There are those who are so self-absorbed they leave a trail of wreckage behind them where ever they go. Will they ever learn?

Please tell me what you think

    Stirrer,

Thank you for your kind words regarding my poem, "Did You Take The Time To Cry?"

I'm afraid the motivation for this piece was not as high minded as you might have imagined. In reality, I wrote this to express my heartbreak over a lost love. The original was much longer and filled with the frustration and confusion that always accompanies unrequited love. At the time, I couldn't understand why she couldn't see how perfect we were together. How wrong I was.If we would have stayed together, I would be dead by now.

    Well, live and learn.

    Thanks again,
    Drybones

  • The piece is great - the rhythm and rhyme flow together for a smooth read. Makes me think of what Jesus said on the cross:

"Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do."

    ya All~Ways,
    ~ Jan ~

  • I stand corrected.
This was a real soulsearcher for me. This is something that applies to me.
Thank you Sir for this piece and wish you a long life.

  • Your title really piqued my interest, and I'm glad it did because this poem really spoke to me. So many people in all kinds of situations would be able to relate to these sentiments, and they are ideas that everyone would benefit from being reminded of every now and then. Readers of this will have no choice but to face serious introspection upon reading this, and that's a good thing. Very impressive, I'm a fan.

      Temporarybeauty,

Thank you for your kind remarks regarding my poem, "Did You Take The Time To Cry?"

This poem was inspired by painful personal experience, yet it taught me a great life lesson. Self absorbed people are incapable of true love. They can never rise above their own self-interest and are unable to give anything of themselves. They can only demand that their partners edify their exalted position in life.

I always seem to have time to cry and mourn my faded youth ... this write made me ponder though ... do I ever learn. I don't think I leave a trail of wreckage but I l always seem to find one left for me ...

Oh my but this one does hit close to home. I indeed had to take the time to cry when faced with the truth of my faded youth and misdeeds. In fact I have taken many opportunities to cry and still do so when needed. God gave us tear ducts for a reason. It is cleansing rain for the soul.

    Wonderful penning,

    Blessings,

    Frogz~

    well written

it ends rather abrubtly, but the content is very good. i love the title and consequently that's my favorite line in the poem. your author's notes are my second favorite part.

and how true...i hope that we all, myself included, learn to be more responsible w/others. we are much more fragile than we look!!

Powerful in its brevity. The notes explain the poem well. Unfortunately, "preaching to the choir" is more than just a figure of speech. Those who most need to mend their ways will never seek out the help and guidance they need. It must be so difficult to be a counselor and a minister and see so many troubled lives. You really must have great faith for it to not weigh you down.

Thank you for your comments regarding my poem, "Did You Take The Time To Cry?" You are most kind.

Also, thank you for your words of encouragement regarding my move to Florida. I am working in a Gospel Rescue Ministry dealing with men who are homeless and addicted.

Although I have been involved in rescue ministry for a number of years, I have never ceased to be amazed at how God's power can transform the most egregious sinner.

Nicely penned. It is short (which I like) The rhyme is very good but the last line seems forced. "behind you burned" .... maybe it's just me. It's because the phrase is usually, burning all of your bridges behind you" and here the phrase is reversed for the sake of rhyming. (or so it seems.) An enjoyable read anyway.

As for the last line seeming "forced," I plead "poetic license" as a defense.

There are some that never take the time to look back and learn. For some it is a simple case they have no real concept of what they do and other simply don't care but luckily most people have some conscious thoughts about where the path through life takes them.

Very interesting. I have a couple of friends and family like that. Yes, there is a time when they learn, but it's mostly when they've lost a lot do they realize. Good two stanzas you have there. They rhyme beautifully, and they speak to my heart. Your contributions are benevolent, and quite frankly, always worth the read.

Thank you for your kind review of my poem "Did You Take The Time To Cry?"

Some people are so self-centered they don't care how many people they destroy in their relationships. They can't commit because they are always looking for something better. Sadly, they don't recognize true love when when it is offered to them, nor do they understand what a priceless treasure true love really is. That's what this poem is about.
