The Tell

Hold’em is my game of choice.
I read the other’s faces.
They talk to me without a voice
of pairs, flushes, and aces.

Their eyes get an intensity
when their hands are strong.
A little sideward glance at me
tells me I don’t belong.

The cards are dealt and I peek
at a suited Ace and  King.
Calls and checks are what I seek
as I watch what luck will bring.

I hit the flush on the flop
and I act nonchalant
but suddenly the others drop
just what I don’t want.

Still, one hangs in as I check
and he pushes all in.
I think to myself “What the heck?”
and the calculating begins.

I see it then within his eyes
that look says he’s faking.
It’s time to give him a surprise
as my grin starts breaking.

I call and proudly show
the Ace high flush I hold.
I’ve got him on the go
his betting was too bold.

He nods but he smiles too
as I realize too late
I hadn’t missed his cue
except his flush is in a straight!

Hold’em is my game of choice.
Other’s faces speak so clear.
They talk to me without a voice
but I don’t always hear.
