And Now I Turned Seventy (Honorable winner )

I started a list of things in this life I want to do
but each time I complete one I add another two.
And why have I done this, I must be quite dense
for when I was not yet seventy I had no common sense

Number one has always been to learn how to fly,
to soar like an eagle high up in the sky.
It's just, now I turned seventy and have common sense
and learning to fly takes too many cents.

Then with my favorite sister to spend one more day,
no cares in the world for us as together we play.
It's just, now I turned seventy and have common sense
and trying to get together is like straddling a fence.

Together with my love we'll travel to far away places
making new friends and seeing different faces.
It's just, now I turned seventy and have common sense
and too much togetherness is making us both tense.

My priorities have changed a tad over the years
and some things from my list I've erased, though not out of fear.
It's just, now I turned seventy and have common sense
and know we must always pay the piper his just due pence.

My list goes on and on with no end in sight.
But never will I end it as long as I can write.
If ever my list should come to an end
I know in this life no more time I will spend.

How do I know this?
Because now I am seventy and I have common sense.

Isn't it great to be seventy! I'm 72 next month.
This week I have three different doctors to go to
and it is still great to be seventy. I see as you see,
    Life is a wonderful gift.

      Hi Artie,

Thanks for reading my poem "And Now I Turned Seventy" ..so far I am fortunate to be in good health and not many doctor appointments...Good luck on yours' though...hope they are just routine...

Do you have a list of things you want to do in this life...I think it is important to have one...keeps us going..something to look forward to each day... I figure when my list is caught up i will be done with this life so never want to get caught up or to the end of mine...at least not while I can get around and get into trouble..Hang in there and we will be celebrating our 80th before we know it... Darlene

I have a long list of things that I want to do before tomorrow
Ah, what is really important, in my opinion, aren't the things we want to do, but the things we have done. You seem to have done a lots of good and fun things, even skating! Dreams are what keep us smiling, so yes, don't quit dreaming and wishing

Hi Darlene, commonsense can be a pain when you wanna have some fun, fortunately I'm still in the age bracket where I haven't got any common sense. So I have to wait until I reach seventy? hmmmm OK then. Great poem you've wriitten, I'll have to ge Heath and I to make one.
    Love Hine

    Dear Darlene,

I’m sorry that I’ve stayed away.
    My brain has been unsound.
I think my Muse has gone to ground
and left me nought to say.
    But Edna’s slightly better now
and so my mind and brain
are starting to come right again
    and I can think somehow.

    Today I'm 77 years old
and I just want to say
if I could only have my way
    I wish they'd never told
me which was the particular morn
    when I was born
'coz then I wouldn't ever know
    how long ago
    I started.

If I should ever cause offence
it's due to lack of common sense.

Applause, love and hugs, XXX Hugh.

      Dear Hugh,

A very, very Happy Birthday to you...I am glad to hear Edna is slightly better and that you have taken time out of your busy schedule to read my entry and write me a note...Hang in there, your muse will return full sail and you will be off and running before you can shake a stick...Give Edna a hug from Bob and I and keep a big one for yourself..And by the way, who is 'common sense' any way..is it someone we need to know...I think not...Life is so much more fun when common sense stays in the back ground...Take care Darlene

Dear Darlene, I have a long way to go before I reach seventy and I'm sure I'll feel the same way, as a matter of fact I should be starting to write a bucket list now because by the sound of it I won't be up to doing them at seventy.

I love your poem, I think it will do well in the voting. Good luck.

Dear Darlene, Yes, at seventy we seem to have more sense, or is it just that our bodies are not as flexible as it used to be. I love your poem it's a corker. My bucket is full of things I'd like to do but......doing them is another thing. Best of luck in fulfilling your list and in the voting.

I like the repeated line, you pull it in with a nice variety of rhymes. Oh goodness, if I have not developed sense yet, I hope I will by seventy! I really like the last six lines - we must have something to look forward to. Best of luck Darlene, this is a fine poem!

Thank you Asethetic..it never fails to amaze me at how smart I am now I am over 70...if only I could have had some of it 'way back when'...but on the other hand I think of all the fun I would have missed with too much common sense...so maybe life is how it should be...Thanks for reading and commenting...

I'm glad I am not in the contest this time because this is good, it will be in the running for the big fat trophy I predict...and cool, I get to check this time as the judge. I like winning contests because I get to be the judge and can spy on the votes.

Sadly it appears I have to wait another 20 years to get some sense. I have a feeling it's going to take longer than that!

I just wish judges could vote.

Thanks Yem for the vote of confidence in my entry...I bet you don't have to wait 20 more years..shucks...I think you got it already...it is fun being judge isn't it...no pressure to write and getting to make the rules...I love beig in charge...just ask my sis...she'll tell you....

One little thing, in line 16: “too much togetherness”. I think your poem is brilliant. I like the repeated use of the “now I turned seventy and have common sense” line. It does draw everything together. Best of luck in the contest.

Thank you Linda, I fixed the typo...I like to say they are typo's but in truth I am terrible at English and spelling...but now I can blame the key board...Thank you also for the lovely comment on my entry...I ran out of ideas for words to rhyme with 'sense' so had to draw it to a close...good thing since my list is really long...

Oh yes, I can attest to this, Darlene. My list keeps growing, too so I know I have to be around a whole lot longer just to get things done. Good concept

This is a realy good poem, Sis and I wish you luck in the contest
    love and

Isn't it interesting how smart we get as we age...but when we really needed our smarts was when we were young and dreamers...now it is wasted on senior moments of trying to find the list of things we want to do...when all we can actually manage are the things we need to...and that makes us among the needy ... so would that qualify us for some of that charity work I do..is that what they mean when they say 'charity begins at home'...isn't it amazing how I have completly lost the train of this thought...So on that note... Thanks for reading my entry...looking forward to reading yours...
