Escape from 2008

The bitter wind chills, the endless snow,
The rains, the flooding, the disasters.
This was an awful year in so many respects.
2009 has an easy task, it seems:
To best the worst year in so many years.
I suspect that it will, if only because, here
In the US, we have a new leader, new administration.

As we emerge from economic and weather devastation,
As we struggle to bring home troops deployed way past
Any effective time of good reason, exhausted emotionally,
Scarred for life, physically and mentally, thinking of the ones
They left behind in the deserts of the Middle East...

We can dare hope, at least a little bit, that 2009
Will be better than that tragedy called 2008.
I wonder, will we ever learn from our mistakes?

Author notes

2008 was mixed for me; horrible weather and other news, as shown in the poem. But I did get a tax refund, rebate, etc that helped me make it through most of the year. 2009 will be tougher financially. We will see what happens.

Great poem, great sentiments! Yes last year has left a lot of debris to be cleared.
