Debbie Smiles

I look at her face scared by life's asperity.
The premature Grey and crows feet from
prodigal days when I though as sure as tomorrow
she would become an unknown body in a ditch
and no one from the family would be there
to listen to the eulogy of a lone dead street whore.

There is a driving force in all of us.
She felt the pressure in the opaque night
to make an escape from the red light district
where she numbed all her memories in yesterday.

Turned and faced the demons that vexed her
binding her in chains of insecurities.
Her stroke of midnight came and she

began to write her own fairy tale.

About the bad girl that went right.
Found her own justice going against
the cold law of city streets
into her own zone of living life.

She still carries the scars of a sullied woman
but the clouds that covered her sunshine
have since parted and Debbie smiles
with a real smile upon her face.
