The World Yearns

Invading the capitol city,
revelers in throngs
breathe in the air of rarity,
intent on righting the wrongs.

~~Desire burns~~

As determined as the sunburned
on fictional mission to Devil's tower,
masses claim what they have earned,
witness to accession of intelligent power.

~~Reality spurns~~

Reason not prevailing,
being there a driving goal,
presence integral to unveiling
the premise of a world made whole.

~~Dedication earns~~

By any manner reasonable,
creative and imaginative,
nothing ruled unreasonable,
believers receive and give.

~~Democracy learns~~

On stage for all to see
stands hope with a vision,
a willingness to decree
decision upon decision.

~~The world yearns~~

Author notes

Drummond, in "New Year's Recipe"
admonishes the reader not
'...to half believe
That by the decree of hope
From January onward things will change
And everything will be brightness, reward,
Justice among men and nations..."

But January 20, 2009 in Washington, DC, USA
one might want to fully believe...

Yes, it seems the hopes of the world can be placed on this great day when new leadership takes on the great challenges; and with so many prayers and wishes there is a wonderful chance for success..but no doubt a new beginning. Thank you for entering the contest.

      Hey, Mariza!

The desire to be there, to be part of the event
evocative of how the world wishes him success.
A more difficult ascending to the office not seen
in many years. And thank you for the Drummond
prompt that set the mind flowing!!

    I like the whole concept!

to dream the "possible" dream! And the way the drawings all have their "right" eye unshadowed as well. I like the changing refrain thoughts inbetween the verses and all of your poem encourages brightness at last! Oh boy ...!

      Joy, you observe well!

      The "shadowing" had many interpretations,
one the sunburned side of the face that
characters in the "Close Encounters..." film
      expereinced, along with their focused
      obsession to teach their destination.
Another, night and day, awaking to a new day.
      also, the neutralizing of "color."

      Thank you, Joy!

Oh and I forgot, I thought of Dickens, "Tale of Two Cities" when I read the first couple stanzas...the French revolution...the storming of the Bastille...here it's a revolution of a sort too. Thanks for the entry. I know Ms. Mariza will appreciate it.

It's the spirit---whether as an individual
or with the massed energy of a group.

Could almost feel thru the TV screen
the emotion, the awe. when Obama
      on that grand stage, accepted,
and then in time received the prize.
Every person, tear in eye, blinking
      knew he or she contributed.
They had to do it. They had to be there,
      in body or in spirit!

The gift to us, literature through the ages
      that captures similar spirits, reflecting
on the commonality, despite the centuries
      between.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Old Drummond's words now have a meaning for me they did not before. It is odd how literature speaks to you when you need it to...like Drummond's poem, like Hazlitt's Liber Amoris, like Aiken's "Silent Snow, Secret Snow" and there are others I read, without intent that spoke to me, gave me advice. Words are wonderful.

And your poem does that same thing...hope, for it not only speaks for a nation, for a world, but also, more egotistically, it lends meaning to my life, I won't even begin here to explain.

It is a process poem, you've written them before. What I mean by that is...you describe a process...the revolt, the take-over, the new hopes...and beyond hopes, a new way of doing things...which is very much like Drummond's intent.

And yes, January 20th is a new start. As you know, I am a cynic, so I want to see results first, but I too have hope...for the world and for me.

I have to watch out, I may become an optimist, lol

Taking note of day and time of those words,
"I have to watch out, I may become an optimist, lol "

Yay! Yay! 2009, the time for hope!
      Liking Yem, the optimist!

      Drummond's words were the springboard
for me to voice comment on the phenomenon---
so many just HAVING TO BE THERE, as if it were
a lif'e's misssion, an event not to miss.

And relative, too, the message, to an individual's life---
to really BE THERE---not to let events pass one by.
To live each minute, to be aware, to press forward,
to allow the mind to revolt, to enjoy the process!

      That's a great thought.
But our guy inherits such a mess.
He will truly need to be an intelligent
      miracle worker!

And a most happy New Year to you, also, arafura.

    "breathe the air of rarity"

It's been a long long time since such charisma graced the capitol stage. Awaiting the turning page...

Significant to choose 8 faces to introduce your poem...regeneration...the start of something new...what "the world yearns".

    Beautiful piece.

Ah, Pixie, the teacher, the coach.
First the colors, now the numbers.
      I need more lessons!

I made the first face, the female,
in about 30 seconds, then stared
at it, thinking she had a long chin.
Had just watched, the night before,
      Jennifer Aniston and Kevin Costner,
      and remembered thinking, hmmmmm,
she has a long chin! So I left her alone.
The male version was too small at first,
so drawn once again. The stars symbolize
the mesmerizing quality of the oratory,
and, of course, reference the sizeable ears!!

The four across seemed orderly, the repetition
indicating different yet the same in spirit.

      Eight also strength, power, success?
Or is that a different manner of interpretation?

Eight is one of those sacred numbers spanning schools of different thoughts. I am no expert in the field...just an encyclopedia of useless knowledge.

I enjoy seeking the interesting fibers in the weave you create with your words and drawings.

There's always more to the story. Thanks for the peek inside your creative process!

Smiling---the fibers, the woof and warp.

As with yours, pix, always more to the story.

When I saw all the stories about people wanting to be in DC
for that special day it recalled to mind the urgency of those
who had "seen the light," Richard Dreyfus et al, in character,
striving to get to the place, Devil's Tower. Inspiration, motivation,
          a compelling force.

And all the enthusiasm has to have that blago damper
hanging in there! What a shame. But think of how
many people want to be there to share the Jan.20 experience!!!
