Beautiful

If I am beautiful,
am I perfect?

Is it perfect if it’s stained?
Is a stain beautiful?

What about the marks you left?
Are they beautiful?
I ask because they’re a part of what’s left.

On my right, the hits you hooked from the beginning,
on my back, the lashes not dodged in the end,
the spinning and the rushing
just blends strands deeper,
the cuts form lace that will never mend.

Lace is beautiful, isn’t it?
If beauty is pain,
I am no longer beautiful.

I am not beautiful
because the swirl of new life arising
wrapped in the patterned shards
means I do not feel individual hurt –

your efforts are blurred
with the rest of the herd
whose best efforts served
to create the linen
which enviously lines the up-stretched neck
of a princess.
