In the Back

We sit in the back, dear old Theda and I,
She’s blind in both eyes, and my back isn’t spry.
On Sundays the folding chairs improvise pews,
I keep her abreast of our neighbors, their news,
their styles and their outfits and latest hairdos.

We savored the music ere meeting commenced,
when Theda leaned closer and whispered, intense,
“Joan, look at the seat, other side of me, do!
I sense something there, or perhaps a some-who!”

I leaned and I looked, whispered, “Cushioned chair pad!”
“Thank heavens!” she giggled; I asked, “Why so glad?”
She laughed with relief ‘til she started to wheeze,
“I feared some old geezer’s pant leg I had squeezed!”

Oh, what a perfect church poem! You are so much fun to read, truly... and poetry about people and places are among my favorites.

I love this winsome poem! It gave me such a nice chuckle. The rhyme and meter add to the charm.
I can picture this so clearly

Haha, fun write. I love humorous poems and they make up the bulk of what I wrote, but it's not too often I come across one that I really find funny. Nice job!!

Thank you for entering my contest. This is a very funny poem and I like the style that it was written in. It flows more like a conversation a than a poem.

HA--totally cute! Funny the slow, easing sound that the chair cushions make when squeezed . . .had it been an old geezer, after all, he would have come equipped with hydraulic joints.

You really set a scene here in these few lines and characterized these two ol' betsies so well. Lots of fun, too!

She sensed something beside her and squeezed it, then tried to figure out what it was. She was terribly distressed that it might be someone who would think she was flirting! She and my Mom are close friends, and love to laugh together.

Yes, that was quite clear...and too funny. What I hadn't considered was that these gals might be real characters...even better!
